On Psychopaths

Do you know what a psychopath is? It’s worth knowing because they do exist and can be very skilled at pretending to be the opposite of what they are. Callous, selfish, insincere, lacking in empathy and acting without remorse, psychopaths can be very charismatic and put on a great show of caring for others. Make Way for Tomorrow (1937)

Well. I’m astounded. I find it hard to collect my thoughts about this film without stumbling over so many feelings. It’s so sweet that I had to concentrate on holding back the tears. Such a beautiful-sweet-sad film about something most of us will hopefully get to do – grow old. Everyone should see it. Continue reading

“I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” (Irish Marriage Referendum, 2015)

As if there hasn’t been enough written about this already… but here goes. The campaign for the Marriage Referendum should now be over as the broadcast moratorium kicked in at 14:00 today (the 21st of May, 2015). Not too early to comment on how the debate played out in the media, then! For those who don’t know, the referendum is ostensibly on whether to allow same-sex marriage. It’s something that should be a straightforward question that most people should be able to decide on with a minimum expenditure of brain power.
